Virginia Tech: With an Array of Degrees and Programs Available
At the heart of Blacksburg, Virginia is Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University - known more commonly as Virginia Tech. There is a great dynamic between the college and the town - frequently referred to as Town & Gown - with the students providing excitement and commitment to their higher education.
Blacksburg is truly a college town, with a strong academic community devoted to furthering education and pursuing cutting edge research.
Founded in 1872, Virginia Tech is nestled in the New River Valley of the Appalachian Mountains. The main university is comprised of nine colleges:
- College of Agriculture and Life Sciences - College of Architecture and Urban Studies - College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences - Pamplin College of Business - College of Engineering - College of Natural Resources - College of Science - Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine - Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine
These nine colleges offer 65 Bachelor's Degree programs, in addition to 145 Master's and Doctoral Degrees to students from around the state, the country, and the world.
Home to more than 30,000 full-time students, Virginia Tech teaches the largest population of students in the state. Though the number of students is large, the university offers a student to faculty ratio of 16:1, ensuring personalized attention for every student.
Although Virginia Tech has several branch campuses, it is the primary campus in Blacksburg that is the largest, spreading over 2,600 acres of prime real estate, boasting 125 buildings and its own airport. Most of the buildings were designed to contain elements of "Hokie" stone, a grayish limestone found in southwestern Virginia.
Academics at Virginia Tech are strong, with there being an emphasis on computing and telecommunications. In 2003 the university unveiled a supercomputer, the third fastest in the world at that time. The university is ranked 46th in the United States in academic research, performing over $375 million in research each year.
Athletics are also an area of strength for Virginia Tech, with athletes - called "Hokies" - competing in the National College Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. On the playing field, it is the University of Virginia that is considered to be Virginia Tech's rivals.
Adjunct to the university, and at the heart of the Virginia Technology Corridor, is the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center (VTCRC), located on 120 acres of Blacksburg real estate next to the Virginia Tech Airport. The Corporate Research Center is the home of the Computer Science department of the university.
The Corporate Research Center was founded in 1985 with the intent of fostering corporate and government cooperative research with Virginia Tech, thereby increasing the university's reputation and stature.
This Corporate Research Center, or research park, is comprised of 19 buildings, housing 140 tenants doing cutting edge research. The VTCRC currently employs 2,200 staff and researchers, as well as 600 students from Virginia Tech. Each year the research park attracts about 20 new tenant companies and the private company fail rate is less than 3% per year.
